3 Way Fridge – Great Travel Extra

September 10, 2010

A 3 way fridge is probably the most useful cooling appliance available to a consumer who likes to travel independently around the country.  These refrigeration appliances are extremely handy as they can be powered by multiple power source; LPG, 12v DC and mains power.

LPG

Propane – or Liquefied Petroleum Gas – is a fuel source that is readily available almost anywhere in the United States.  There are many devices in the RV and camping industries that can run off of Propane.   The vast majority of RV’s and travel trailers include refrigerators with the capability to use this power source.

When hooked up to a small Propane tank a motorhome fridge or caravan fridge can typically run for weeks before the tank needs refilling.  The efficiency of cooling using propane makes 3 way fridges very popular for refrigeration in off-grid cabins also.

12V DC

3 way camping fridges also have the ability to draw power from any 12v power source.  Common options here are a vehicle battery – as for a car fridge – solar and wind renewable energy setups, and also 12V outlets in travel trailers or RVs.

While 3 way refrigerators are not particularly efficient when running off 12V power, this option does exist and provides an extra choice for those times when the other power sources simply are not available.

Mains Power

The final power source for 3 way fridge is of course a simple power outlet – i.e. mains or shore power.  This option allows an owner to simply use one of these appliances in the same manner they use their home fridge-freezer.

When on the road many camp grounds, caravan parks and RV resorts provide access to mains power at each site; thereby allowing the fridge to tap into what is often a free resource.  However, if you have to pay for electric use it may be more frugal to run the refrigerators in LPG mode.
